Resume Advice for Attorney Candidates

If you’ve been out of law school for a while and haven’t made any recent career moves, it is very likely that your current resume is outdated. Whether you only need to add your latest work experience and tweak a few minor details, or you need to completely reformat your resume and add an abundance of content, these resume tips will help ensure you shine brighter than the competition.

Creating Your Attorney Candidate Resume

The first rule of writing a resume is that there are no strict rules on organization or the information that should be included. Your resume is an excellent tool to highlight your background, experience, and achievements, and it is a great way to convince potential employers that you’ll be an asset to their team. Remember, the key to success is familiarizing yourself with your audience and then focusing on the information that will grab their attention.

Resume Length

While it is common for people to say that professional resumes should be more than one page, this is not a requirement. That doesn’t mean you are restricted to a single page, however. Simply be sure to include experiences and achievements that are relevant to the job you seek and highlight your talents. Generally, one to two pages should be sufficient.

Resume Formatting

While it’s important for your resume to be organized and easy for potential law firms or corporate legal departments to scan, you are not restricted to a specific format. Some attorneys, especially those with less work experience, tend to insert their education first. Others with more relevant experience to offer include their experience first.

Short and Sweet

Since hiring managers tend to scan resumes quickly, it’s important to be concise when writing your resume. Otherwise, important information can get buried in the content. Be sure you summarize your strengths and highlight your achievements and leave out the small talk and information that is not relevant to the position you are seeking.

Tailor to Fit

There is no one-size-fits-all resume. Be sure to customize your resume to fit each position. Consider the type of position you are seeking (associate move, partner, or in-house counsel) and modify your resume by adding relevant skills and assets.

Hobbies and Interests

While it is perfectly acceptable to include your interests and hobbies in your resume, be sure to stick to those that are relevant to the position you are seeking. It is also a good idea to include any memberships or affiliations you might have special interest groups, alumni, or professional entities.

Polishing Your Resume

Since your resume is a direct reflection of your professional abilities, it’s important that it be without errors, well-organized, clear, and visually pleasing. Avoid using a flashy format or multiple fonts. Additionally, headings, bullet points, and bold words will make your resume easier to read. Many people use computer software to help ensure their content is error-free. You may also consider having another professional review your resume before you submit it.
